+If my machine misses the scheduled backup (i.e. powered off), will the missed backup job automatically be executed when my machine resumes?
No, SmartCLOUD EPS OBM will not execute the missed backup job, it only execute the scheduled backup job.
+If my machine is in low power mode, can the backup job automatically run?
No, the scheduled backup job will not be executed if the machine is in low power mode (power-off, sleep or hibernate). However, logoff the machine is fine.
+Can I backup the outlook .pst file on my machine?
Yes, as long as the .pst files are saved in the folder of local machine, SmartCLOUD EPS ACB can backup it.
+Can I change my encryption key in future?
No, you cannot change the encryption key for the backup set afterwards. You have to delete the backup set with all the backup data and re-create a new backup set to key in a new encryption key.
+Is there any pre-requisites for different backup type?

Yes, different backup types have different pre-requisites:

Windows System State Backup:

1. Make sure that the Windows System State add-on module is enabled for your SmartCLOUD EPS OBM user account.

2. The Windows Server Backup feature must be installed for your SmartCLOUD EPS OBM user account.

3. Make sure the latest Microsoft Windows service packs have been installed on the server to be backed up.

4. The temporary directory must be configured on a local drive and enough free space.

Windows System Backup:

1. Make sure The following Windows Features are installed on the client computer:

Windows Server Backup Features

- Windows Server Backup

- Command line Tool

- Windows PowerShell

2. The temporary directory must be configured on a local drive and enough free space.

Microsoft Exchange Server Backup:

1. Make sure that all MS Exchange related services have been started, particularly the MS Exchange Information Store and MS Exchange System Attendant Services.

2. Make sure the Exchange Server has been updated to the latest roll-up patch of that specific service pack.

3. Make sure that circular logging is disabled for all Information Store(s) or Public Folder selected for backup.

4. Make sure that the Microsoft Exchange Server add-on module has been enabled for your SmartCLOUD EPS OBM user account.

5. Temporary Directory folder used for storing backup set index files and any incremental or differential delta files generated during a backup job must be configured on a local drive with enough free space.

6. Make sure the Microsoft Exchange Writer is installed and running on the Exchange Server and the writer state is Stable.

7. If you are using Microsoft Exchange Server 2013/2016 on Windows Server 2012, make sure .Net Framework 3.5 Features is installed.

Oracle Database Backup:

1. The temporary directory’s disk space must be at least 120% of the total database size (e.g. total size of all database files).

2. All database selected for backup must be in ARCHIVELOG mode.

3. Grant JAVASYSPRIV to the system account.

Microsoft SQL Server Backup:

1. Make sure the add-on module Microsoft SQL Server has been enabled in your SmartCLOUD EPS OBM user account.

2. Ensure that the SqlServerWriter is installed and running on the SQL server and the writer state is Stable.

3. All MS SQL server related services should be started by default.

4. Make sure the MS SQL entry is present in the registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\Instance Names\SQL".

5. For transaction log backups the Recovery Model must be set to Full.

6. The temporary directory must be configured on a local drive and enough free space.

Lotus Domino and Notes Backup:

1. For backup of Lotus Domino server, all database selected for backup must have transaction logging (archive mode) enabled.

2. The temporary directory must be configured on a local drive and enough free space

MySQL Server Backup:

1. The MySQL database instance is online.

2. The mysqldump utility is installed on the MySQL database server.

3. The mysqldump utility is the same version as the MySQL database.

4. A MySQL user with ALL PRIVILEGES must be prepared for the backup operation.

5. Make sure that ‘localhost’ on the MySQL database server is resolvable and ‘localhost’ is allowed to access the MySQL database instance on the MySQL service listening port (default 3306).

6. Exclude the 'information_schema' and ‘performance_schema’ databases are MySQL virtual system databases, which contains information about the user databases on the MySQL instance.

7. The temporary directory must be configured on a local drive and enough free space.

VMware Virtual Machine Backup:

Prerequisite for VMware vCenter / ESXi Server

1. Make sure that the latest supported patch release is installed on the vCenter / ESXi hosts to prevent critical issue, such as corruption to change tracking data in certain situation.

2. ESXi Shell access must be enabled on the ESXi servers.

3. SmartCLOUD EPS OBM requires root account access to the ESXi server to perform backup and restore.

4. For environment with firewall, the vCenter, ESXi servers and Backup Client Computer must be able to communicate with each other.

5. Ensure that ports 22, 80, 111, 443 and 902 allow outbound communication on the vCenter and ESXi servers.

6. Sufficient disk space must be allocated on the datastore (e.g. 1.2 x size of the largest virtual machine selected for backup), where the virtual machine(s) to be backup are located.

7. For VMware ESXi version 5.1 and earlier, the maximum size of a virtual disk to be backup cannot exceed 1.98 TB (or less, depending the block size setting of the datastore).

8. To create consistent backup for your VMs on Windows platforms, ensure that VMware Tools are installed and up-to-date on all VMs to be backup.

 

Prerequisite for Backup Client Computer

 

1. For backup of virtual machines on ESXi server (with no vCenter setup), a separate Backup Client Computer must be prepared for SmartCLOUD EPS OBM to be installed on.

2. For environment with vCenter setup, SmartCLOUD EPS OBM is installed on the vCenter computer for best performance.

3. For environment with firewall, the vCenter, ESXi hosts and Backup Client Computer must be able to communicate with each other.

4. Make sure that ports 22, 80, 111, 443 and 902 allow outbound communication on the Backup Client Computer. Refer to the link below for details on port usage.

5. The temporary directory must be configured on a local drive and enough free space(e.g. 120% x provisioned size of the largest virtual machine selected for backup).

6. Make sure SmartCLOUD EPS OBM is installed on:

- 64-bit Windows OS if you will back up VM data to VMware vCenter/ESXi 6.5 or above in VDDK mode.

 

- Either 32-bit or 64-bit Windows OS if you will back up VM data to VMware vCenter/ESXi 6.5 or above in Non-VDDK mode (Free VMware version)

+Is there any pre-requisites for different backup type?
Yes, different backup types have different pre-requisites:
+When I perform a schedule backup of my network drive, why there is always an error indicating “Access is denied” ?
Windows doesn‘’t support volume shadow copy (VSS) for the network drive, so if the file is being used during backup, SmartCLOUD EPS OBM will not be able to backup it. Please ensure all the files on network drive are closed before backup.
+When I perform a schedule backup of my network drive, why there is always an error indicating “Backup Source Does not exist!”?
Please ensure the network drive is always accessible during the backup. You can perform the following actions:
• Configure the Windows Service “AutoUpdateAgent (SmartCLOUD EPS Online Backup Manager)” and “Online Backup Scheduler (SmartCLOUD EPS Online Backup Manager)” to run as an user who has access right for the network drive.
• Create a pre-backup command (Net use...) to mandatory map the network drive before the backup starts.
+I have subscribed the remote installation service and will the engineer help me to create the backup policy?
No, China Entercom's engineer will remote install the SmartCLOUD EPS agent for the customer but not create any backup policy since creating the backup policy involves key in many confidential information, for security reason customer must do it themselves.
